So why is TikTok so popular and why has the majority of people jumped on the TikTok train in 2020?

Well, if it isn’t already scientifically proven already, people like to watch short, entertaining videos. That’s also probably why Vine, the American social networking short-form video hosting service, was so incredibly popular in 2015 as they had similar concepts. Some visit these apps to watch funny videos of their favorite creators or to create their own videos.

“Vine was hugely popular in the mid 2000’s”

TikTok lets users create a 15-60 seconds video of themselves (or of anything, really). Some people dance or do pranks while others create stunning make-up looks or do story-times in their videos. Feature music can be added in the background. The video can be slowed down or sped up. Different filters can also be applied. The options on what you can do with your short videos are endless!

“The Rock and Kevin Hart are really best friends”

If you’re not into recording videos, the app has their ‘For You’ page or short ‘fyp’. It’s a feed of videos, recommended to users based on what kind of content they liked, interacted with, or searched on the app. When you’re on the fyp, you’ll most likely end up scrolling and watching videos for hours and hours. Though most of the short videos posted are fun and light-hearted, some can be a bit more on the serious note, talking about real-life issues.

“I just wanna be appreciated”

Creators on the app have known to become internet famous and to start trending all over the world. TikTok internet celebrities which have gained crazy amount of followers are Loren Gray, Baby Ariel, Kristen Hancher, Zach King, Lisa and Lena. Though, the most popular TikTok star is Charli D’Amelio, who is now the most-followed individual on the app with more than 70 million followers.
